ORIGIN OF CAMU CAMU

The camu camu (Myrciaria dubia HBK), belonging to the Myrtaceae family, is a wild bushy fruit tree from the Amazon, which grows on the flooded banks of rivers and lakes or lagoons with dark waters and can remain completely submerged in water for four or five months. In Latin America it is found on the banks of the Amazon, Ucayali, Marañón, Napo, Tigre, Curaray, Yavarí and Tahuayo in Peru; Putumayo and Inírida in Colombia; and also in the upper Orinoco basin in Venezuela. The greatest concentration and diversity of populations is in the Peruvian Amazon. Camu camu is a fruit with great genetic diversity, which has a high content of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) whose values are between 2,000 and 2,994 milligrams per 10 grams (mg/g) of fresh pulp. Likewise, in the language of the Shipibo-Conibo peoples, the Myrciaria dubia is known; like camo-camo; and uses the pigment from its mature shell to dye vegetable fibers of the Chambira (Astrocarium chambira). Camu camu was initially considered as a natural source of vitamin C by Ferreyra in 1959 in his monthly report at the La Molina Agricultural Experimental Station.
